Tuesday 15th March – ski ***** Thollon les Memises – sunny ( 39.35 miles, 47.62 kts )

Good night but were woken again this morning by some large piece of plant moving about near the van and we have no idea what it is! Morning dawned sunny and fairly blue so only time for a quick chapter and breakfast before walking up to the ticket office. We have, as usual, parked at the farthest end of the car park away from everyone – not that there is anyone here as the resort is very quiet:)
The mystery of why a quarter of the car park has been blocked off with a barrier is solved as a team of workman were erecting a large marque to celebrate 60 years of the ESF ( the ski instructors .) We paid 49 Euros for the day including insurance and headed to the Nouvelle Telecabine and this was the only time we had to us our ticket all day! If you walked up the steep black, you could ski all day for nothing! On reaching the top we were greeted with a large bowl and it was time to enjoy, as the brochure say, 50 KM of Pleasure accessible to all !
Skiing down the easy green run we saw a man on a fat wheeled mountain bike out with his girlfriend on skis, there are not many places where you can go biking and skiing together:) Mag made friends with a huge black dog out for a walk with its owner and then we skied down to the right to start Tetras button and fly down the reds both sides. Because this is a north facing resort the snow stays firm and fast all day, in fact it was too icy and fast for Mag who sadly struggled on several of the pistes as her blades are just too short for these conditions, it was cold too which helped keep the snow good and so so quiet which was fantastic having most of the resort to ourselves:)
We spent most of the morning doing all the runs in the bowl, there are lots of button lifts to the right including the steep Mottet which was particularly tiring on the legs! It was then time to move onto the long Parchet chair lift and we had a great time on the Les Fees, L’Azalee and Les Myrtilles reds, in fact nearly all of the resort is red making it not suitable for beginners especially with the hard packed fast runs but they stayed very smooth not rucking up all day:)
Then it was time to try what looked on the map the best run at Thollon, the long Les Vielles Cases run! I was hoping to video the run, with Mag ready at the top I pressed record and set off and the run was fantastic, fast and steep with the most amazing views across Lac Leman far below- not that Mag saw much of that as she hated it with her short skies making it very difficult for her:( Then when I got to the bottom my camera had not recorded, in fact it had seized up:( I have been having trouble with my new camera - not a year old yet! I think I must have got some water in it! I will have to send it back to Fuji when I get home to see if they can repair it but I am not holding my breath:(
Mag managed to make it to the bottom vowing never to do that again but I loved it! It was then the short Cornien button to the La Frasse chair, a really old two seater which took you back to the bowl. On the way we passed the spot where we had walked to yesterday :) After a quick trip down the La Frasse red I decided to do the Cases run again while Mag had fun in the bowl. I also tried to improve my best speed of the holiday finding a fast spot down the Myrtilles red and made 47 kts – that’s about as fast as I want to go on skies with my poor old legs!!! After several runs I met up with Mag and we headed to the top of the Tetras finding a nice spot for our picnic with top views over the resort. It was too chilly to sit there long so we were off again. Mag decided to give the roller coaster Cases run another go! Top girl for being so brave:) the first part down is fine, fast with good snow, we even stopped to watch a paraglider take off and head towards the Lac. I love this run, super fast, stunning views and Mag managed a little better this time:) I loved it so much I decided to give it another go while Mag went to the bowl. The sun had disappeared now and it had got even colder so we decided to call it a day and skied to the Bambi which took you the short distance to the cable car. You then had a choice take the black Les Lanches run or take the telecabine, Mag had had enough adventures for one day and went down in the cable car while I risked the black! It wasn’t really a black just a narrow winding path at the top with lots of safety netting followed by a steep red to meet Mag which I did:)
We were out six hours and enjoyed most of it although to be honest not as much as Lelex! It was then a walk back to the van past the erected marque for tea and cake:) I think the weather is supposed to crack up so we might move on tomorrow!
